Getting Started with a sketchbook

Have you ever had a sketchbook?

I have had sketchbooks before when I went on a trip and wanted to make art and journal at the same time. This sketchbook is a bit different though, because the goal is to use the pages as learning spaces, not as completed drawings or paintings.

These images become part of a mind bank that I can use when I want to create an illustration from imagination. It is all just complete fun! And it helps me create art with no pressure.

The first illustration I have shared here is a sketch I made of some houses down in Round Rock, TX. Instead of trying to make them look exactly as they were in real life, I used a few new colored pencils I had just bought and worked on making the colors harmonize.

I really love drawings of houses in books, especially when the houses look warm, inviting and a little bit quirky. I sat on the balcony of the house where I was staying and drew some houses that stood across a field, far enough away to be captured easily in their entirety. I only had a few minutes to make these drawings and I think that helped them be spontaneous and fun.

Looking forward to sharing more sketchbook stuff with you soon!
